I have a 1993 vw passat vr6.. Recently the transmission is slipping now and the check engine light is on.. When I called I was told that it could be the transmission or it could be a cylinoid?? Now assuming the that either or was on the way out.. How long could the car last with a bad transmission or a bad cylinoid??

intrument cluster 2002 vw

Gurnee VW informed that because my gas light was always on, this indicated a short in the intrument cluster which would eventually cause the car to "immobolize" Cost to fix $670.00 Took car to VW Autobarn in Mt. Prospect, Brian, the service manager, told me that all I had was a "stuck light", Yeah, rare, rare chance that the whole instrument array was bad, but not just because a gas light on. His advice "save my money". It pays to check things out, and Gurnee VW is the WORST nightmare, dealers make a difference. I'll never go anywhere else than Autobarn VW in Mt. Prospect.Anybody else had any problems with "instrument cluster"?

85 jetta electrical problem

in my 85 jetta there is a constant charge comeing from the battery, and it drains it overnight. so what i did is unhook the the interior light circuit, and that ended the problem, also it happend with my 87 and 89 jetta as well. before i would unhook the battery to save it, u could see a spark between that battery, and the cable, so i knew that it was sumthing sticking on. so if anyone has a solution to this instead of just ripping out my circuit, because no i have no interior lights or clock other than the dash lights, and radio.

Rohrman in Lafayette isn't much better.

Isn't it amazing that we were going to replace the piece of crap Toyota Camry that we bought from the Bob Rohrman dealership in Lafayette with a VW Jetta...that is until we came across your website! Thanks! Like Tiffany, we purchased what we thought was a Certified Pre-Owned Toyota Camry from the Rohrman dealership in Lafayette. Talk about being taken for a ride! Within ONE week, the brakes were squeaking and my husband called the salesman who put him in touch with some incredibly snotty woman in the service department. She said something to the effect like --that's what you get when you buy a used vehicle--. My husband told her that it wasn't safe for our family to be riding in, as I was pregnant with our son and we had a 6 month old daughter. He explained to her that we had only had it for a week and that it was still under that little 30 day warranty that the salesman said we had. Finally after arguing with her for quite a while, she said that although they don't usually staff for such repairs on a Saturday we could bring it up and they would look at it. We were sitting in a little waiting area while they checked our car (it had high partition walls like that of a cubicle in an office) and we overheard two men talking about our car. They were discussing who had signed off on the "certification" because the brakes were absolutely shot. Immediately I began to wonder if something as important as the brakes wasn't checked correctly or completely what else could possibly go wrong? Not to mention that if the brakes were indeed that bad why weren't they making those horrible noises when we had test drove it only a few days before? The service "lady" came to talk with us about the repairs that needed done to the brakes; she said they could do the repairs that day with parts that were not "Toyota approved" or we could come back on Tuesday and the "Toyota approved brakes" would be available. She said that our extended warranty, that they pushed so heavily when we bought the car (I now see why), would not cover non-approved Toyota parts. Unfortunately we didn't have much of a choice and had to get the repairs done that day as we live over 50 miles away and wouldn't be able to bring the car to Lafayette in the middle of a work week...(which she knew). Anyway, to make a super long story somewhat short, we're desperately trying to get rid of the car now. It makes some incredible noises and the brakes haven't been right since the day they "repaired" them. It was so horribly overpriced, and now we're facing a negative equity situation. I absolutely will NEVER purchase anything from any Rohrman owned dealership again. The bad thing about is that the Toyota we purchased was the second car we had bought from them and I cannot believe how badly we got screwed on the deal. We have learned the hard way but hope that our lesson will help someone else make a more informed purchase.

Bill Jacobs VW Sucks

I am just writing this to let everyone know about what a shitty place Bill Jacobs VW in Aroura is. I have to take my VW Passat there a tone of times, and eveytime I pick it up they tell me I need this and I need that. The car has 7,000 miles on it how much can it need. When I asked to speak with the service manager Mark Z. They told me he isn't here anymore. OK fine so I speak with the current servic manager Steve Derosa, and this guy, haha, I don't even think he knows a thing about a volkswagen. Then after awhile of talking he told me that the tech. that worked on my vhicle was fired. Seems to be alot of people in and out of this place. The bottom line is please do not have your car serviced there. Has anyone else had any problems with Bill Jacobs???

I think if this site was more public regarding horrendous experiences with Rohrman dealerships the number of complaints would be astounding. Both my mother and sister have had horrendous experiences. My mother brought her SUV in to get serviced for some problems they estimated would cost $600 and take two days to repair. My father who knew what the problem was told her to take it to his favorite local repairman. It cost $30 to repair. Enough said.

I'm so glad I found this site! My husband and I purchased a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 2 1/2 years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. I've tried dealing with VW headquarters and the dealer in our area with NO luck (they are all such helpful people!) I've resorted to making up fliers with information on how to complain to various organizations and putting them on all VW's I see.

We are trying to now sell the stupid thing (this leads to a moral and ethical deliema - here nice person, I won't tell you the car sucks and has had numerous problems, enjoy the car!) Not only can we not keep it fixed long enough to sell it, but somehow we are upside down! We put down $5000 dollars on the car and have been making payments, but there is no way we are going to sell the car for what we still owe.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, PLEASE HELP!

Liberty Auto Plaza in L'ville stinks

I had a gas filter changed on a VW Fox from Liberty Auto Plaza in Libertville, IL on a Saturday afternoon. When Sunday morning my garage smelled like gasoline because the filter was not installed correctly at Liberty Auto Plaza. Liberty Auto Plaza wanted me to drive the car back to the dealer on Monday morning to fix it. I could not believe it! To make this long story short, the car was towed back and corrected..no apologizes or reimbursement from the dealor. I vowed never to use their service again..until a year later for an oil change on a VW Jetta. I had to take the car back 3 times to correct an incorreclty installed oil filter that dripped oil all over my garage floor..You would think I learned my lesson.

TOUAREG NIGHTMARE

This is a nightmare:
I had to have this towed to storage until VWOA reaches a decision with my attorney. I drove this for less than a month. it was in the shop from 12/17/03 until I had it towed on 1/15/04.

My TOUAREG NIGHTMARE

>
I woke up to a dead battery on 12/17/03. Towed Treg to nearest
> dealer-100miles. Dealer said they could not find anything except a
> discharged battery and charged battery . Told me it was fixed. To make
> a long story shorter, I picked up Treg and Nav unit had me on I55
> which was at least ten miles away. Took it right back.
> On 1/09/04 I was called by the dealer and they said they had
> experienced another problem. After driving the car into the service
> area the starter would not disengage, so they cut the wires to the
> starter.
> Now they say that this is the real problem . It seems they are just
> applying tape to whatever is next to fall apart with this particular
> built Treg.
> They said they Called the VW Treg tech hotline and told me the problem
> NOW is a wiring harness that came from the factory mounted and clamped
> to tight and routed too close to the manifold and had been heated and
> chaffed into bare wire.
> Whether this has anything to do with the original dead battery problem
> is still a mystery to me and from talking with the service manager, to
> him as well.
> All I know is the dead battery issue has been addressed at least two
> times, to my knowledge, and maybe more in the service area , where I
> do not get to see everything that goes on, so I really do not know
> what all they have tried.
> The service manager, assistant service manager and service advisor
> agreed that , in they're opinion, after the attempts to fix and the
> complex nature of the problem, VW should replace this one. This is my
> assertion as well.
> UPDATE: After meeting with regional VWOA rep. , service manager,
> assistant service manager, and service advisor have changed their
> opinion and now want to try and fix the car. I have declined the offer
> and insist on replacement . Preferably buy back unless things change
> with my relationship with VWOA and its regional rep!
> This is how it started: Dead Battery was problem.
> 1. First they replaced a generator,
> 2. simply charged the battery,
> After each fix, VW service says it is fixed and bills VWOA for parts &
> labor & loaner car.
> Now after the service tech cut wires to the starter, I get yet ANOTHER
> STORY . I do not trust the diagnosis and repair technique used so far
> and am distrustful after having speaker blown, battery cover trashed
> and motor panel surrounds broken while in getting the battery charged.
> I think anyone can see that the track record of this problem speaks
> for itself and is not in favor of VWOA or its representatives, in this
> I have no confidence in what I am being told anymore. I don't know who
> told the service tech to cut the wires to the starter but I certainly
> did not and did not know it till they called me and told me. All I
> know now is that THE FIX NOW for the cut wiring harness that the
> service tech cut is to drop the frontend, take motor out, take wiring
> out, rewire, and then re-install motor.
> I will not accept this after spending so much on a luxury SUV.
> IMNO, it came from the factory UNMERCHANTABLE. PERIOD!
> This vehicle has 7k miles on it and the severity of the problems it
> has , I consider it a lemon and will be forced to address in such
> manner.
> If it were a minor problem, it would be different, but with all the
> disassembling and re assembling of critical electrical interface
> issues , which control everything on the vehicle, I would never feel
> safe or have any confidence in this vehicle again.
> ;I have a chronic illness and have to have reliable transportation and
> I do not have any confidence in this particular Treg .
> I love Touaregs and I really am upset about this and have tried to and
> get VWOA to replace it as I found another Treg owner with the same
> identical problem and VWOA replaced the Treg in that case. I wish VWOA
> would replace and make it right.
> This is MAJOR , Big time trouble and I have sold cars, have friends
> who have sold cars and own dealerships and none can say that any real
> MAJOR electrical problem is ever really fixed and haunts the owner for
> the life of the vehicle.
>
>
> I hope Touareg OWNERS will share their experiences on this board.
> Good and bad. I wish this was not happening but things like this DO
> happen and that is why I am so glad to see a board with this topic.
>
>
> I WISH EACH TREG OWNER A PROBLEM FREE EXPERIENCE BUT THIS IS, MORE
> THAN LIKELY, NOT REALISTIC WITH VW , SO I HEAR FORM LONG A TIME VW
> OWNERS! AT LEAST, I HOPE YOUR PROBLEMS ARE MINOR AND YOU CAN ENJOY
> YOUR NEW VEHICLE AS IT WAS INTENDED.
> IF you do have a MAJOR PROBLEM, please post it so I can see if there
> are others with similar issues.
> I will gather all relative data and see that it gets to VWOA and
> hopefully get this issue resolved for all . l appreciate your posts.
> Regards,
> DL

Any resolution for you?

I own a 1999 VW and just read your story (on 10/10/03). I was sorry to learn of all the strife you've had over a car that is supposed to be all about the enjoyment of driving. Did you sue VW or the dealer? I was interested in whether there's been any resolution. I do agree with you absolutely that placing a hang tag on a used car that says "VW Certified" and the VW dealer selling you that car is a representation that the car meets the VW certification standards for resale. (I would think that even if the hang tag was NOT in the car -- after all you bought it from the dealer!) A failure by the dealer to actually inspect the car for compliance with those standards, to my own mind, is his problem, not yours. And I'd expect you would be entitled to return the car because you were misled about its certification. Smells rotten to me. (The preceding is a personal opinion only and is not intended to be relied upon as expert advice for any purpose, whether financial, legal or technical.)

2001 Passat Burning Smell when driving

We own a 2001 Passat and we've been having problems with a burning smell when we turn on outside air and when you are standing next to the car after it has been turned off. When the hood is lifited to investigate where the smell is coming from it isn't coming from under the hood, just somewhere around the car. We thought that it might be spilled oil from an oil change, but this is becoming an intermitten problem this is going on two years now. The VW mechanics amazingly can't smell anything when we bring it in to be service. However, everyone else that rides in our car remarks about the burning rubber smell both inside and outside of the car. We recently had to service the car because of an intermitten problem with the check engine light. We spent around 1K just having them tell us this was a common problem and the sensor was to be replaced. We regularly service the car for oil changes and warrenty checks/recalls. To no avail, the burning smell coming from the car is a mystery. If anyone has information on what could be causing this burning smell, please email us and let us know. Feedback is most appreciated.

Gurnee VW sucks

Despite the warnings on the site, I thought I'd go there to get an extended warranty. How could this be tough right? Wrong....first they said they couldn' t because I didn't buy it there. Then they said i had to put it through an inspection at their service dept. They were reluctant to do anything for me and would not give me any info. I called Frank Boucher VW in Racine, WI. They were extremely friendly, didn't need to inspect the car and were very forthcoming with information. Gurnee VW is a horrible dealership ...they're slimy

New Car - Seized Engine

I purchased a 2001 Jetta in 2001. When I bought the car there was only 900 miles on it. I asked the dealer why did the previous owner turn the car in so soon, his response to me was "He wanted to move up to a bigger car." It was not too long after I bought it that I was taking it back to the dealer for repairs at 1523 miles, and 2438, and so on. I was bringing my car to the dealers at least twice a month, sometimes more.

I had to bring my car into the V. W. shop more than 30 times in the past year in a half,(incredible). I drove so many rental cars from them not fixing the problems correctly.

After going through all of this with the car, I had a deal offered to me to replace the car or get a two year warranty. Seeing how I put so much work and money into the car I was a fool and accepted the two years. I was told that I would be getting a letter in the mail to confirm this. The letter never came but the first problem did. My car is sitting at the V.W, Dealership with a seized engine. V. W. Denied ever giving me a two year warranty and now wants me to pay over $5,000 to fix my car. I'm still making large payments on this car that I no longer have.

drive train noise - please help

After complaining to my dealer and meeting with VWs
regional representative about a driveline clunk in my
2002 Passat with 4-Motion, I received the following
letter from Volkswagen of America in Rochester Hills,
Michigan. The letter is signed by Bonnie Cramer of
Customer Care.

Dear Sir:

Mr. Karl Zerrenner, Field Operations Manager,
requested I send you a letter regarding the drive
train noise in you vehicle.

The noise (clunk) during acceleration and deceleration
is a normal operating characteristic of the Passat
with 4-Motion. It is evident in virtually every
vehicle configured the same as yours (meaning with
4-Motion).

Ive stopped several drivers of 4-Motion Passats and
have yet to find an owner with a driveline clunk. And
I think it is absurd that VW would intentionally sell
a car that costs over $30,000.00 if they are aware of
this problem. If you drive the same vehicle as I do,
I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you
have the clunk or even if you dont have the clunk.
Please include the year and mileage of your vehicle.
If you would prefer to write to me personally, my
email address is messageme33@yahoo.com

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

avoid Volkswagen at all costs ( repair costs )

I bought a new VW Passat in 2000 and sold it in 2003, long before my usual seven year car ownership period. The car was sleek and fun to drive, but what good is a car whose engine light comes on every one to four weeks? From 15K to 40K miles, Southern States of Durham, with VW's "assistance", was unable to fix a persistent check engine light situation. VW should have offered to replace the car given the history of repairs, but instead they started charging me for repairing this ongoing condition. VW customer service exists merely to give people the initial impression that they can help, when in fact they are powerless. I surmise that they exist merely to pacify people long enough to get them out of the lemon law period.
