ALMOST A FIRE

I was driving last Sat 6/14/03 with my 5 year old girl, pulling off an exit to get a cold drink. The right rear Michelin tire that came with my 2000 Passat exploded. We continued to pull off to MacDonald's where I could stop and get a look at it.

I couldn't change the tire, since there was a locked lug and VW didn't include the key for it in my toolkit. Well, it turned out to be a good thing because, after sitting down at a table and getting a look at my car from a distance, I saw a puddle underneath. It turned out to be gasoline! The fire dept. and police dept. had us there for 5 hours, trenching off MacDonald's for a potential fire while we waited for towing.

What strange luck, I thought. Until I heard from the dealer insPecting the car, then a friend who manages a VW service dept.

There was a recall on 1999 and 2000 Passats for a "fuel tank filler abrasion issue." If a driver had a flat tire or blowout, the car was desinged so that the fuel filler neck will get punctured and cause gasoline leaking.

I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, and were you ever notified of the recall? If so when and how?
