--- (Edited at 1/8/2003 3:37 pm by Meryl) --- My '97 Jetta just caught on fire (bought new and only 85,000 miles, good condition)in my garage. Earlier that morning,my husband opened the car door and the engine fan spontaneously turned on, even though the car had not been driven in a week. We were planning to take it to our mechanic the next day but later that afternoon, 5 minutes after my husband arrived home in our Honda, he heard the smoke alarm and found the Jetta burning. He grabbed the key and pushed the car out of the garage, saving our house. He and several neighbors worked to extinguish the fire. The car is a total loss, but thank god it was just the car. Insurance says that they will cover but will be looking at recent repair/maintenance records. This is truly bizarre.

Yes they did this with my '97 Jetta also. Make your insurance company aware that many VW's start on fire, it seems very common. Until we make a stand against VW they will not correct the problem. It is scary that we trust the safety and well-being of our family in these cars.
